Debate Paper - Occupational Health

Job security, finances, and health issues are factors that could cause stress to employees which can lead to increased risks of a heart attack, stroke, or hypertension (Hamlett, 2015).
Workplace injuries are still liable to occur even though employers implement safety protocols. Another way to be injured at the workplace is by slips and trips. In the United States, more than 5,000 people died from occupational injuries (Levy, 2011, p. 315). People tend to be less cautious and may not see a spill which leads to falls. Employees often do not wear the proper shoes to prevent slips and trips. Linoleum, hardwood, and tile flooring surfaces are particularly hazardous after they have been mopped or waxed (Hamlett, 2015). When employees are handling hazardous materials, they are required to wear protective clothing and personal protective equipment to prevent risk of burns, respiratory diseases, blindness, and skin infections. Besides spills, employees are likely to trip over items that are left out on the floor or extension cords that are not securely taped down. Carpet that is not properly in place on the floor can cause accident to employee also. Sometimes people are not aware or paying attention to what's under their feet and eventually stub their toes.
Although safety procedures may be efficient in the workplace, it still may be flawed do to employers and employees not following these procedures. Before starting an occupation, employers educate employees on their safety protocols which is to be followed every day. Accidents are bound to happen due to carelessness and lack of knowledge of the safety procedures in the workplace. This causes more injuries such as pulling back muscles when an employee is not using the proper techniques to lift heavy objects. Collisions are likely to occur when employees may open a door too quickly or turn a corner too fast causing frequent setups for unintended collisions (Hamlett, 2015).
