A Lesson before Dying is one of the most popular novels released by Ernest J. The novel explains how life can be challenging and showcases the importance of bravery in order to fight the obstacles life will ultimately throw in your face. Bravery is the most important lesson before dying. In this novel bravery is well shown by the characters Tante Lou, Grant, and Jefferson.
In A Lesson before Dying, Tante Lou demonstrates the most important lesson; bravery, through a couple of different ways. One way bravery is shown is by doing the right thing. Tante Lou had done the right thing by pressuring Grant to also do the right thing by Jefferson, who had been wrongfully convicted as a murderer. She had also promised Grant that he will feel content once he becomes the cause of the smile on Jefferson's face. Tante Lou knows that by supporting people in tough times can bring happiness to everyone involved. Tante Lou showed bravery by standing up for what she believes is right. She forced Grant to go help Jefferson become strong enough to stand up for his community as a black man. The most important lesson is bravery and Tante Lou showed how brave she was by standing tall and proud for what she believed was right. .
In addition to Tante Lou, Grant shows how brave of a person he is as well. Grant was against the idea of helping Jefferson in the first place but after some convincing from his aunt, Tante Lou, he agreed. It takes a certain amount of bravery to go against what you originally believed in, open your mind, and realize that the right way to do things was not your way, even if it took a little push from someone else first. Grant was willing to talk a lot with Jefferson before his time was up and had become friends with the other man. Becoming close with Jefferson was a form of bravery in itself. To get close to someone, all the while knowing that they are just going to be ripped away from you, but still following through for the other person's sake takes some courage.
