The Problem with Lying

Lying not only hurts the person we lie to, but it also hurts us in the end. A lot of people think that if they lie for a good reason, then it makes the lie acceptable. Here's what I want you to think about. Think about a young girl in the prime of her innocence at the age of six. She loves the world and sees the good that each person has within him or her. She doesn't know that not everyone has the same intentions or heart as her because she's young and naive; she's never been burned before. Now take this same girl and fast forward to the age of fifteen. Freshman year of high school, and everything feels like it's harmful to her future. What guy she dates, what clothes she wears, and what friends she hangs out with feels like it's the most important thing that the world has to offer. This fifteen-year-old girl falls for a boy on the football team, and you know the story. She's cheer captain, and he's starting quarterback. She falls for him, and ultimately, he ends up breaking her heart because he lies to her about something completely predictable. We've seen it in movies and heard it being sung about in songs. But, this heartbreak is more than just a romance tragedy or Taylor Swift song; it's now an issue that causes deeper problems within each and every decision. That once innocent little girl who thought no one would break her heart found out the hard way that people lie and tell you things to make themselves seem better.
So, what does a lie do? A lie breaks someone's heart for the first time and shows them that the world doesn't have as much sweetness and love as once believed. Sure, everyone has to learn that there are different kinds of people in this world, and some you can't trust. But, does a lie have to be what forces us to mature? Why can't someone hurt us with the truth? Why can't the starting quarterback tell the cheer captain that he likes another girl? Why can't your best friend just tell you that your make-up looks awful and refuse to let you out of the house before you get made fun of? Lies range from small to big, but ultimately, they are useless.
