"The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society".
Imagine living in a world, the same world that everyone else resides in, but having to live a life so closed and sheltered that the daily experiences, which most enjoy, are a horrifying burden. Imagine being one of America's countless underprivileged restricted to poverty because of a handicap that so many take for granted. A life of painful and embarrassing moments that never cease, and a life of restriction that so greatly diminishes a person's sense of worth that they are constantly surrounded by hopelessness and grief. .
America is overflowing with its share of problems. Poverty, unemployment, corruption, hatred and many other evils pollute the notorious "home of the free". Being the most affluent country of the world, for many, the mindset in the United States is to be one ahead of the next person. Although the media exposes these tribulations to the people, most continue living their life and hold the belief that there is nothing they can do to help. The most repulsive of these problems, however, is sadly ignored in today's society. At least 25% of adults in each state are illiterate. Many of America's illiterate are unemployed and live in poverty, however, many people do not understand the impact and negative affects illiteracy has on America.
In today's society, everything has it's own fine print. There is no universal trust for anything, and therefore, not being able to read seriously limits the freedom of a person. Illiteracy hurts the country as a whole, the loved ones of the illiterate person, and deprives the person themselves of a decent life. Because the president governs us all, many are concerned with who wins this role. Illiterates, unable to read what the media depicts, have a very poor understanding of each candidate, and must "vote for a face, a smile, or a style, not for a mind or character or body of beliefs" (qtd.
