Barley's Ethnography Research in Cameroon

After more waiting, his visit is approved but is told he now needs to apply for a Visa. At this point Barley thinks after this it will be his last encounter with the Cameroonian bureaucracy, however his trip to the embassy involves many setbacks like it not being open or the correct person not being there and even coming across ignorant workers. He is once again asked to explain the reason for his trip. This would not be the last time he would encounter this. .
When deciding on how to get material needed for site research, anthropologist must decide whether to have it shipped to their place of study or buy locally. Barley's inexperience guides him to opt on buying his materials in Cameroon. Many anthropologist order their needs and have them shipped to the country of research but problems with that also exist due to customs, stealing, bribery, damaged, etc. Inexperience plays a big role in Barley's decision once again. Once he reaches Cameroon he once again bumps up against the Cameroonian bureaucracy. He needs to complete paperwork that includes information he is unable to provide and through his pass through the airport is almost robbed. He is hurt and gets overcharged by taxi driver. When he goes from Douala to Yaounde he is again stopped for more paperwork where he waits 3 weeks for his approval to stay (which actually allows him to stay for 9 months and not for the 2 years he had requested in his initial paperwork) and in the meantime finds the city unpleasant and starts running low on cash. Barley goes to a banking institution to open an account to deposit his grant money and is assured that he will get a checkbook in the mail. In reality he is delayed access for 5 months. His train ride to Ngaoundere takes 17 hours instead of the 3 hours it should take. At this point he is 2 months into his 9 month approved visit and he is yet to be in front of a Dowayo. To every one he talks to about the Dowayo, their response is that they are useless and illiterate people so at this point Barley is perplexed and uncertain what his remaining trip holds for him.
