Even in today's time, sports stars, models, and actors are held in high regard by the people for their position, wealth, and even bravery. The words of the captain portray Macbeth as a brave and honorable warrior. Also, another character trait associated with Macbeth is kindness. After reading the letter sent to her by Macbeth, which included news about the witches and their prophecies; Lady Macbeth says to herself, "Yet I do fear thy nature; It is too full o' the milk of human kindness, To catch the nearest way" (I.vi.17-19). In this quote, Lady Macbeth is talking to herself about her husband, saying that Macbeth's kindness is an undesired characteristic. In her eyes, his kindness makes him weak. Even though the citizens of Scotland consider Macbeth to be a brave honorable warrior, Lady Macbeth considers him weak because of his kindness. In today's society, a person may be considered good and successful by many, but for others they do not match up to their standards and, therefore, are not good enough as they are. With these words, Lady Macbeth lets the reader know that Macbeth is a kind man. Also, during their conversation about murdering the King, Macbeth is said to lack 'masculinity.' In their home, at this time Lady Macbeth says, "When you durst do it, then you were a man" (I.vii.56). Here, Lady Macbeth is saying that Macbeth would be a man if he were to take the King's life. By saying this, she is saying that he is not a man in her eyes, at the moment. These words cause him to become set on a path to prove his manliness to his wife. This results in many unfortunate deeds in the future including the murders of King Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff's wife and children. Some may even argue that it is the due to this idea of proving his manliness that Macbeth commits many evil deeds in the future. Even in society, words have the same level of effect it had in the play.
