My American Dream

I want to graduate college and make my mom see that all her efforts were not in vain. My American dream would have been different if I still lived in the Dominican Republic. Most Dominican's American dream is to be able to come to America and help their families in their country, but many times when they do get the chance to come to America they are slapped in the face by the truth which is that it is not easy to succeed in this country even with the countless opportunities that we all have to study and to become more successful. Many immigrants when they arrive to a new country especially if another language is spoken struggle because of the language barriers. It is not a secret to us that most immigrants have less privilege than a naturally born citizen of the United States of America. This is important because I feel like all the hardships that my family and I went through are the reasons why today I try so hard to succeed and accomplish my American dream. Situations like this are the ones that lead us to look back and reevaluate our dreams sometimes making our dreams and goals to change.
Jose Vargas reminds me of when I came to this country and the dreams I had in his short story "My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant" because he shows how tough situations can lead us to have different dreams and aspirations. Vargas like me, never imagined how hard it would be to earn an education. As he grew up he was lied to about his legal status in the United States; which lead him to have the American dream of striving to become legal. Many illegal immigrants phase this challenge because their legal status interferes with them accomplishing their dreams. It broke my heart to find out that he was gay because that meant that his possibilities of becoming a legal citizen through marriage were very slight. When Jose Vargas said, "This is my home. Yet even though I think of myself as an American and consider America my country, my country doesn't think of me as one of its own.
