Art in Seattle, Washington

Having taken figure drawing and sculpture classes I am familiar with some of the great artist of all times. Da Vinci, Van Gogh and Michelangelo to name some of the best renown. Although all the great artist from the past paved way for the arts, paintings and sculptures. Today there is vast group of artist throughout the world who are trying to leave their on mark in the art world's history book. Even though some will not be world famous their masterpieces make a lasting impression in the cities they live in. Last month I had the pleasure of visiting Seattle, Washington for the first time. Although my visit was brief I was fascinated by this cities love for the arts. Seattle was one of the first cities in the United States to adopt a percent-for-art ordinance in 1973. By providing opportunities for individuals to encounter art in parks, libraries, community centers, on roadways, bridges and other public venues, we simultaneously enrich citizens' daily lives and give voice to artists. (Seattle web).
I did not visit a specific art gallery since it was Sunday and well past showing hrs. I did get to visit various sites in Seattle that are well known for their public art. My drive up N. 36th street took us to the Freemont Bridge (once called the Aurora Bridge). There to the left, under the bridge stood the biggest, scariest sculpture named the Freemont Troll. He was sculpted by four Seattle area artists, Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter and Ross Whitehead in 1990 for the Fremont Arts Council. This cement sculpture stands 18-ft. tall, intimidating at first. After taking a closer look at this left side parted haired troll with his one shiny metal eye, well he did not looked scary at all. The head-and-shoulders sculpture, because he shows no lower torso, looks like he is sprouting from the ground. Propping his massive upper torso are two long bent arms and unproportioned fingered hands.
