Issues of Trust in Hamlet


There is no trust between Hamlet and Laertes in the play because Laertes does not know the whole truth about his father's murder. He believes everything that Claudius tells him, some of which is true. The very fact that Laertes questions Hamlet about his father's death, shows just how difficult it is for Laertes to trust Hamlet. Hamlet's poor decision on killing Polonius believing it was Claudius has caused Laertes to lose trust in Hamlet. If Hamlet had the chance to kill Claudius in the church, Polonius would not be dead. The trust between Laertes and Hamlet would not be ruined. People's loss of trust in Hamlet is the factor that progresses to his tragic end. The knowledge of Claudius being the murderer of Hamlet's father is the reason why the play takes a turn with Hamlet falling out of friendship.
             Ambition to gain power can be a quality in human beings that could make them less trust worthy. The ghost of Hamlet's father revealing the truth about his death is a testament to this: "Upon my secure hour thy uncle stole With juice of cursed hebenon in a vial, And in the porches of my ears did pour "i(Act 1:5 60-63) The ghost has come back seeking revenge on Claudius. He is using Hamlet to get back at Claudius for killing him for taking over the kingdom and his wife. Trust is not shown between the two brothers, showing that sometimes even family cannot be trusted. Loss of trust is the main factor that splits the families apart in this play. The ambition that Claudius had for power allowed him to kill anyone in his way. The abnormal quest for power is the reason why Claudius has such tragic interaction with his family. It shows how people resort to killing their own family member to get what they want but, do not deserve it. Hamlet is talking to himself about his uncle's reaction to the play: .
             "With most miraculous organ. I'll have these players.
             Play something like the murder of my father.
