By freeing nurses from manual record keeping and other time-consuming chores, HIT can increase nurse-patient interaction, improve the quality of care and increase patient safety." (Maxim Healthcare Services, 2008) I personally like electronic scheduling. I feel as if it is more organized and provides better options to book patients.
Manual scheduling may seem old fashion to some, but it can be a reliant method for medical offices also. "Attendees know exactly when the appointment will take place. There is no need to wait for the appointment requests to be processed to find out when the appointment will take place. Appointment scheduling can close at a later date since there is no need to process and assign them." (Total Event and Association Management, 2012) This quote supports my opinions of doing the scheduling manually. It may take more time to file it this way, but depending on a computer would no longer be an option. I feel as if all of the employees in the offices should know how to schedule manually. It will be an asset to the company to have employees who are knowledgeable of this information. If something happens to be erased from the computer or if the information is lost, falling back on manual scheduling will help the office in the long run. Protecting the patients should always be the number one priority.
Electronic scheduling has many advantages, but there are a few disadvantages also. "When some users of the system are unaware of how to keep their calendars up-to-date, the system can fall apart." (Davidson, E. & Media, D., 2015) From my personal experience with scheduling appointments for the patients using optum, I have come to realize that you must enter in everything correctly or you will come across an error. I most certainly agree with this quote, failing to keep things updated can cause unnecessary complications. Patients may wait longer than usual for an appointment or the doctor may have several appointments that he is unaware of.
