Ghost Stories, Family and Trauma

The author does not like the ways of the Victorian times and its patriarchal society and dees not waste any time with 'thoroughly British dissatisfaction' the author sets the scene early on with the estate agent when he describes the house to family and sets the image of a typical Victorian family with George being the head of the house, provides for the family brings the money in and makes all important decisions, the wife knows exactly what her role in the family is having to beg 'George to see about getting a nice house in the town for season' although she does go on to explain that she is 'the happy, foolish little woman I was but then goes onto talking about putting 'George'sfavorite dress on'this shows how George does not see her as an equal and more of an object typical stereotypes of a women's role in this era with the man providing
We see that the author is frustrated with the patriarchal ways as she creates the ghost as a woman, but the ghost has masculine features.
'Tall woman, strongly built, and broad-shouldered, a quantity of light hair hanging in a disordered manner on her neck, and the profile of a white, hard, masculine face'.
The fact that the ghost is a woman is highlighted this is because she shares the same features that belong to men strong, tall and composed. This on the other hand could just be a metaphor used by the author to emphasize that the country was slowly losing its way with the decline of the British Empire and the switch of roles between the males and females. It is also clear that the feminist movement in Victorian era was not happy with the ways and launches an attack on patriarchal Britain and the decline of the typical Victorian family ways. This is endorsed with the ghost being wicked and upsetting the family and no surprise the women's response it's to scream in hysterics this is symbolic as Victorian women could not control their emotions because they had a womb.
