When it comes to the Excerpts from The Gendered Society, writing by Michael Kimmel, he talks about how there are a bunch of variances when it comes to gender, for example how men and women are associated with certain jobs or responsibilities. With that being said, Kimmel is trying to say that this is the result of gender inequality not the sole cause of it. He questions the dramatic differences in the definitions of masculinity and femininity around the world. To support this statement he goes on to talk about how our jobs, families, schools, etc. are something he calls "Gendered Institutions." He says that these institutions show not just male and female differences but teach gender inequality by explaining how every single one of these examples introduces and supports male dominance. Plus, if you do not follow the rules of the blatant inequality presented up front you then you are seen as a deviant and then must be disciplined. .
Under the subtitle, The Variations in Gender Definitions, Kimmel states that "Mead was clear that sex differences were 'not something deeply biological, but rather were learned, and once learned, became part of the ideology that continued to perpetuate them'" (Page 299). Kimmel explains how he thinks that the differences that are associated with gender were not one hundred percent because of biological backgrounds but it had to do with the society or culture you live in today, such as American culture and so forth and so on. He dwells on the topic of family and talks about how we need more shared responsibilities between husband and wife when pertaining to housework and outside jobs. Without both men and women doing things equally in a family it causes strain on relationships that don't just involve adults but children as well.
From Excerpts from "Hierarchies, Jobs, Bodies: A theory of Gendered Organizations," Joan Acker in her article explains to the reader how symbols, body, family, and class all have to do with gender when it comes to the workplace or any organization.
