Literacy and Theories of Cognitive Development

Eventually, the children are able to read without the need for reward.
Stage Models of Reading- these are the diverse ideas that educators have purposed about the stages that readers have to develop before gaining good proficiency in reading. There are many different ideas that the educators and researchers have about processes that a child must go through. However, they do agree on one major factor in Stage Modeling. "A central point unifying Stage Models as the common belief that the ways in which children approach the task of reading qualitatively change as they mature." (Gunning, 2010, pg. 97) This idea is generally accepted because as children progress though school, they typically get better at reading and writing. .
Emergent Literacy Theory is important because it takes two important factors into accounts. First, it details the importance of early literacy development in a child. Secondly, it provides a track for instructional path that provides early literacy development. "The term "Emergent Literacy" refers to a period in a child's life between birth and when the child can read and write at a conventional level" (Tracy & Morrow, 2012, pg. 99). The book places 3rd grade as the model for which this emergent literacy should begin. This theory is intriguing because of its basic scheme. If a parent can get their kids started in reading, writing, and speaking early then their kids would generally excel at those cognitive skills, aiding them in school. However, it is important to note that this is not always the case due to various developmental abilities of kids. Family Literacy Theory is probably the most important theory out of all because it starts with the first teachers of kids, which are their parents. The fact is when we start learning how to speak, walk, play, laugh, it is our parents that we learn from. However, it is equally important that parent teach their kids early in childhood how to read, write, speak, and most important listen.
