Civil Construction in Brazil and the USA

One of the clearest differences in civil construction between Brazil and the USA is the most common material used in standard constructions. In Brazil, the predominant material used in construction is brick masonry while in the United States they use wood. There are reasons for this divergence of material. The weather is one of the most important explanations. Because in the United States some places get very cold during the winter, the wood is used as thermal insulation to keep places warm. In Brazil as the coldest temperature is not too low, it doesn't need to use any material to maintain places in a comfortable temperature. Instead of wood in Brazil walls are constructed by brick which benefits acoustic insulation. These materials are very different, and it is very easy to compare their disadvantages and advantages. The strongest difference is their weight. Bricks are very heavy while wood is very light. The process of construction using both materials is very different too. Brick masonry walls need to be executed on site and wood walls come prepared to receive the installation and finishing processes. The use of these different materials also influenced civil construction in the United States and Brazil to have more in contrast with other aspects such as time of production, cost, and damage to environment. Wood construction provides a better efficient time of tasks and also helps to reduce waste. Besides, it provides more benefits the environment since it can be replanted. The use of wood as structural material is not the only aspect that makes civil construction in United States faster than in Brazil. The deadline for constructions of building in Brazil is three times the deadline of the United States (Mello and Amorim, 393).
One characteristic that makes Brazil a step behind of the USA is the use of skilled labor which is very important in the context of civil construction. In the USA, unlike Brazil, there are many requirements to qualified labor to work in civil construction and these requirements help to maintain a higher quality of work.
