Cruelties of Deception and Manipulation

In our time at class we have read several plays such as the plays "Othello" and "Hedda Gabbler". Although these plays take part at very different times and locations both the themes and the characters in the plays remain extremely similar to one another. Such as the characters Iago and Hedda, these two both share very similar qualities of deception and both tend to manipulate other characters for their own benefits. From their actions they ultimately betray everyone who is close to them as well as create their own downfall. .
In "Othello" one of the most key themes within the play is the act of deception and control of others. The mastermind behind almost all of these acts is the character Iago, the antagonist. Lead by his envy of Cassio for receiving a higher ranking position from Othello that Iago felt he more rightfully deserved, he lies and steals his way to revenge while using others as pawns in his schemes. "Much credit must be given to Iago's diabolical prowess which enables him to bend and twist the supple minds of his friends and spouse." (Novelguide) His first victim, Roderigo, is tricked into doing his dirty work by believing that if he listened to Iago, as well as paid him, that he would earn the hand of Desdemona. This is nowhere than further from the truth, Iago could truly careless about Roderigo's desires; that in the end even though Roderigo had followed every instruction to the letter Iago both metaphorically and literally stabs Roderigo in the back. Iago's reasoning for killing Roderigo in itself shows his true nature, for he did not kill him because Roderigo was unable to murder Cassio, but it was merely to tie up loose ends. Even throughout all of this deceit Iago manages to implement his wife along with all of his schemes by having her steal a handkerchief from Desdemona. Which Iago use in his manipulation of Othello, causing him to kill his own faience, Desdemona.
