This novel is besieged with the theme loss. To Oskar, it is his only goal to find out what happened to his father by slowly peeling the back layers in hopes of grasping and understanding that death is inevitable in any stage that it may present itself. Oskar's inevitable search for the missing pieces of his father's death creates a comfortable realization that satisfied his curiosity in the long run. Though not obvious from the start, Oskar's constant quest for satisfaction allowed him to cope with the loss of his father. It is not easy to lose a loved one. The novel displays this by showing Oskar reflecting on the memories he shared with his father. For anyone who has lost their father, the idea of your "super hero" falling to an enemy is uncanny. Individuals, including myself can also realize that there are various motifs exposed in the story. The terms "heavy boots, incredibly and extremely" are motifs that are repetitively shown which helps readers realize that these words are substantial. Oskar lets readers know that he is most definitely able to carry out his feelings without seeking attention. Readers can easily sympathize with his pain and agony easily since he expresses it well. His "heavy boots" help in the sensual image that targets readers and makes them understand the loneliness Oskar is going through without his father. "Feeling pain is still better than not feeling, isn't it?"(Foer 245). Individuals oversee how important pain is to life. It is crucial. Individuals can also disregard how physical pain can settle in a period of time, but mental pain can last a lifetime. This quote is just to remind us that pain lets us know that we, individuals are alive. It is not the most comfortable reminder, but it is a reminder nonetheless. Thus, Oskar proves how much he loves his dad by going on a journey, meeting new people and overcoming his problems.
