Short Story - The Fiery Start to Summer

Whenever the team scored, they played this song. It was a good way to get both the team and the crowd excited and pumped up. When I was in the office, my mother told me, "Your father has been in an accident at the stadium." There are moments in life that define a person as to who they are and who they will become. This moment changes their outlook on life and their entire way of living. Hearing the news about my father was that moment for me. I knew I would always remember that statement for the rest of my life. At first it took me a few minutes to register what I was just told. However, as I looked from my mom to my sister, the worried expressions on their faces made me suddenly realize what had really happened. Immediately as I hear "Who Let the Dogs Out," the sudden rush of sadness comes to me as all I can think about is the stadium and what had happened on that dreadful day. What used to be a song for enjoyment and excitement as the team scored was now burned into my memory as a dreadful reminder of what happened that day.
My dad had to be air lifted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Jaycee Burn Center. On the way to see my dad, my mind went crazy with the "what-if" scenarios.  'What-if he is dying,' 'What-if he can't be the same as before,' 'What-if I lose him.' I remember the number one song on the top 100 countdown on the radio was "We Are Young" by F.U.N. featuring Janelle Monáe. Not only was the song irritating to me at this point, but now it constantly reminds me of the painful one hour and forty-five minute drive and those terrible "what-if" thoughts. It was not necessarily the song and the meaning of the song itself that bothered me. At the time I was too worried about my father to actually focus on the words of the song. While my family drove to Chapel Hill I did not want to focus on the possibility of what we were going to see when we arrived at the Burn Center.
