Cencerto For Bass Tuba

On the other side were the democratic, capitalist, Western countries, like The United Kingdom, France, and later the United States of America, who entered into the war after Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor. They fought to repress Hitler's ideology, preserving their own ideas of democracy, capitalism, and equality for all. Even though the war ended in 1945 shortly following the death of Hitler, the marks that the War had left on the continent and the world, both physical and metaphorical, were still fresh at the time that Vaughan Williams was composing his concerto. The first movement of Vaughan Williams' concerto starts as a very precise and methodical tune, with simple repeated patterns that give it a very clean and organized. However, about halfway through the movement, it shifts into compound meter, and every so often the soloist will have three quarter notes, and there will be two dotted quarter notes in the same spot in the accompaniment. This hemiola pattern creates a more chaotic, unaligned feel, and completes a perfect metaphor for World War II: the precise duple first half representing the beginning of the war, when everyone was happy to support the war effort and fueled by patriotism, and the chaotic compound second half represents the later stages of the war, when everyone was desperately waiting for the end, which remained out of sight as the death toll skyrocketed. World War II was part of Ralph Vaughan William's inspiration for his tuba concerto.
One of the residual outcomes of World War II was the Cold War, another major historical event that had a great amount of influence over Europe and the rest of the world during Vaughan Williams' composing of his tuba concerto. After World War II was resolved, two countries had emerged as the world's dominant military powers: The United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Both were extremely powerful, but the two of them had major ideological differences, which is a recipe for disaster.
