Technology and Communication

With today's cell phones patrol cars officers as well as foot patrol cops can access GPS for accuracy of locations, use voice command to dial numbers, send and receive messages and pictures of suspects, share surveillance videos and also receive important alerts regarding crimes. By having access to the internet on cellular device officers can locate where registered sex offenders in particular neighbors live. Cell phones can also be used by officer to locate areas in which crimes have been committed and the number of reported crimes in that particular area. "Today the most commonly used law enforcement communication devices is the two way radio with as much as 700-megahertz" (Law Enforcement, n.d). Two way radios can be used to call for back up as well as contacting other officers. After the attack on the Twin Towers, September 2011, the government was forced to improve the radio communication system due to emergency personnel needing to communicate with each other. .
Technological devices such as the MDT, two-radios and cell phones have greatly increased the communication lines in the criminal justice system. Officers are no longer stuck sitting behind desk to complete a long drawn out hand report. These communication lines have found to be very useful to several in all areas of the court process.
Looking into the future, the technology that I could foresee being used in future interviews and interrogations would be a room that could monitor body heat and heart rate. The room would be wired where it looked like a normal room. There would be someone in another room to monitor the device and communicate with the interviewer. Most individuals get nervous when they are not being truthful causing their heart rate and body temperature to rise and many people will normally show visual signs of sweat or perspiration. This would be like the modern day polygraph test except there would be no wires connected to the suspect or interviewee.
