Morality and Acts of Justice

In the later chapters, the author talks about three approaches to Justice: maximize welfare, respect freedom, and cultivate virtue. The weakness of this topic is the lack of examples to explain more to the readers why maximizing welfare, respecting freedom, and cultivating virtue will assist people. On the other hand, there are examples of justice given in "The Runway Trolley" and "Afghan Brothers" topic. In "The Runway Trolley" topic, the author argues about the right thing to do in different perspectives. What would you do if you were the driver of a trolley car going to hit five people because of your broken brakes? Will you turn your steering wheel to the other person on the side to save five people's life? Do you think that is the right thing to do? A lot of people said yes. From a different perspective, imagine if you were the person looking at the situation and you saw an opportunity to push a person in front of you to the front of the trolley to stop it to save five people's life. Would you push that person? Many people said it is not the right thing to do, but why? The author said, "Pushing a man to his death with your bare hands does seem more cruel than turning the steering wheel of a trolley. But doing the right thing is not always easy" (23). I believe that is a strong statement. This statement gives strength to the whole book by mentioning that doing the right thing is not always easy, which is very true. In "Afghan Brothers", if the soldiers had not let the goatherds leave, 16 soldiers would have not been dead. They should have killed the goatherds instead. However, in the trolley story, what if that one guy on the side was from Osama Bin Laden? The driver would not even hesitate to turn his steering wheel. Furthermore, in my experience, I had to throw my shoes at a dog to save the life of a cat one time. It was happening right in front of my eyes.
