"Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget." (Randolf, 1998) Friends come and go but what is it about that one friend that stuck around through thick and thin? Everyone has their own personal characteristics of what they require for their friends and in this world I believe everyone has that one go to person if they are in need. My one go to person is Royce Jackson, my best friend. As a 2009 study by huffington.com, the average friendship lasts about seven years (Levine), Royce and I have been best friends for eight years now going on our ninth year. As for friendships that lasted longer than seven years, what was it about their friendship that made it above average? As I sit back and reflect on our friendship I wonder what it is about Royce's that made it so long lasting and durable. From boys, to drama, school, and much more these things are never able to break us apart. Studies say by Kashdan, (2013) that with the better quality friendships one may have, the more likely it is for someone to be happy. According to dictionary.com, a friend is a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. There are so many characteristics that someone would want a friend to have but the criteria that I believe is needed for a successful friendship is loyalty, common interests, and lastly non-judgmental. .
Loyalty is giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution. To me loyalty is a necessary characteristic to have in a true friendship. By demonstrating loyalty over time trust and respect will eventually be earned. When a person has a friend and things are said in confidence, or in time of need it should be kept confidential. Loyalty is something that within a friendship it has to be practiced in front of the friend and also behind the friends back and is something that is built up over time. Royce and I over these past years take the essential steps needed in our friendship by practicing loyalty on a daily basis where we both make an investment to strengthen the friendship.
