The problem with people these days is that most don't feel the need to help improve others' lives; the majority of the time that normal citizens take place in fundraisers seems to be only when their kid has to do it for school or another situation where they feel obligated. For example, the World's Finest Chocolate fundraiser, it is prevalent in most public schools, whether it be elementary school or high school; the ones who actually go out there and make an effort to sell chocolate are doing it because of the incentives they are given. The children don't go out and bust their butts selling chocolate to do what's morally correct, they do it because they really want that amazing grand prize! They participate in the fundraiser to achieve a form of personal gain, it is quite seldom that young people donate their time and money out of the goodness of their heart. Rewarding people for doing what they should do anyway only promotes selfishness, donating to people in need should be something that the human race as a whole consistently strives for simply because it's right.
In order to put all students on an equal playing field and make it entirely fair, bonus points should not be allotted by that amount of physical items donated. Of course it is fine to donate things like food and clothing for those who need it, but it's unfair that the select number of people that are in the position to do that, will be more successful in a class because of it. The solution to this dilemma is to make bonus points determined by a student's actions and not their possessions, students should be able to donate their time rather than money. Paying the way through a class is highly illegal, is this not essentially the same concept? .
One could argue that it shouldn't matter if it's fair to all students or not considering that it's just bonus points, it doesn't hurt a person's grade whatsoever. This makes is a valid argument, although in certain situations it could hurt someone's future and level the playing field with competitive scholars.
