Gatsby - The Great I Am

Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby resembles a Christ-like figure. Upon reading the novel, one may not pick up on the biblical allusions throughout the book. However, a closer look reveals a religious connection with the protagonist, Jay Gatsby. Nick Carraway, the narrator, describes Gatsby in such a way that an evangelist would describe Christ. From the moment Nick meets Gatsby, biblical allusions are presented. When first meeting Gatsby, Nick describes his smile as "rarewith a quality of eternal reassurance" (Fitzgerald 48). In 1 John 2:25, Jesus "promised.eternal life".Nick also realizes that Gatsby had a "heightened sensitivity to the promises of life" (Fitzgerald 2). Jesus promised his people "that they may have life, and that more abundantly" (John 10:10). Gatsby assures Nick that if he wants anything to just ask for it. According to Matthew 7:7, Jesus promises that his people can "ask, and it will be given to [them]. Seek and you will find." When the party starts to die down and Gatsby is "standing alone.looking from one group to another", Nick can "see nothing sinister about him" (Fitzgerald 50). Just as Jesus was not sinister because he "committed no sin" throughout his life on earth (1 Peter 2:22). Nick even states that Gatsby "was a son of God" and "must be about his Father's business" (Fitzgerald 98). In Luke 2:49, Jesus, the son of God, tells his earthly parents that he "must be about [his] Father's business". Although Gatsby's and Jesus' business consisted of two entirely differently tasks, both have an end goal while on this earth. Gatsby's is to win back Daisy's affection and Jesus' is win back a fallen mankind. .
In order for Gatsby to obtain Daisy's love, he throws parties to get her attention. Usually church services are weekly as are Gatsby's extravagant events.
