The Story of An Hour and The Use of Force

"The Story Of an Hour" and "The Use of Force" are two tales of women battling ailments while interacting with those closest to them. "The Story of an Hour" follows a heart diseased Mrs. housewife, in the wake of her husbands presumed death. "The Use of Force" is a story of a young girl concealing her undiagnosed Diphtheria disease. The two stories similarities are shown through the tension between male and female characters in each story, the rebellion toward the ideal roles in the females respective lives, the presence of characters that are living with physical ailments, the setting of both stories and the family oriented vibe both of the authors portray through their short stories.
The tension that exists between male and female characters is a distinctive similarity of the two stories. The male figures in both "The Story of an Hour" and "The Use of Force" are portrayed as agitators. The young girl's doctor seems to be more of a nuisance than her, "membrane covered tonsils" as they were described in paragraph 33. When she screams, "Stop it! You're killing me!" it is clear his insistence to check the young girls throat causes physical pain as well as anger. Throughout "The Use of Force " Mathilda and her doctor battle for control over their situation. Putting the young girl "on the defensive" and making the much older doctor seem unprofessional. The Story of an Hour's male character Brently Mallard is indirectly the determining factor of all his wife's emotions. Had it not been for the misinformation of his death, Louise Mallard would have continued to live the life of a typical 19th Century wife, she would not have had her brief but immense joy snatched from her by the realization that his death was a false report. At the sight of her husband Louise passed away. According to doctors, she died of heart disease.
