Chryses - A Man of Honor Above Self

Chryses does not simply request his daughter's return, but he does so formally, emphasizing the organization and the respect in his petition. The organization of Chryses' plea is not pure happenstance but the result of planning. Chryses chooses to politely request his daughter back, rather than forcefully demanding her return. Chryses places himself beneath Agamemnon through his polite request. Chryses' compassion leads him to uphold Agamemnon's pride by willingly lowering himself in a society that centers on pride and honor. As a priest of one of the gods, Chryses has a high social status and does not need to subordinate himself to Agamemnon. However, he knows the importance of Agamemnon's position over his men and respects this position. Chryses puts himself on the same level as Agamemnon's soldiers as to not show an example of intimidating Agamemnon. .

To sway the opinions of the gods takes more than just prayer however, it also requires sacrifices and offerings. Chryses prayer demands more than his words, it calls for giving more of what he has. For Chryses to help Agamemnon and his army in the war is worth more than any physical possession he could offer, as well as shows his respect toward Agamemnon through his willful giving of himself. Chryses resect not only works toward the reacquisition of his daughter, but also expresses his compassion for Agamemnon's pride and honor.
