Have you ever heard about Descartes's contribution? In philosophy, I admire one famous modern philosopher, who had several extraordinary contributions to philosophy in France, is Rene Descartes (Lavine 86). In Descartes's theory of animal, he contributed a quote, which is that "animals cannot use language to express themselves" as we do when placing our thoughts on record for the benefit of others, or in other words using language to make known ones thoughts in a meaningful manner (Lavine 118). He also showed his famous method of doubt, "I think therefore I am," is the basis of his theory of knowledge known as dualism (Lavine 97). I agree with both Descartes's theory of animal and the method of knowledge, which is "I think therefore I am" because Descartes made us to understand what ideas were in his mind.
First, it is interesting that Descartes stated, "Animals cannot use language to express themselves," but I disagree with Descartes because animals use their feelings and emotions (soul) to make human understand what they try to communicate. To demonstrate, I have seen a movie called Hachi, which is about a loyal Japanese dog, sat and waited for his boss at the gas station every day. One day, Hachi's boss died when his boss was teaching in New York University. Hachi kept waiting for his boss to come home with him, but Hachi's boss didn't appear at the gas station. At the end of the movie, Hachi still waited for his boss to come back until he took a last breath at the gas station. This is a true story. In my opinion, animals and human are the living things on Earth. We share love with them, and they will share their feelings with you. Moreover, animals have no ability to talk, but they are very intelligent (Lavine 119). For example, chimpanzees is the top of the animal intelligence. Some scientist say that chimpanzee can organize a series of random number to an order of number from one to ten.
