Recycling and Reusing Materials

Next the plastic was separated by grade then melted down in silos. After melting, the plastic is fed through a machine that turns it small spaghetti like coils which cuts it up into many pellets. Those pellets are used by many companies like Trodat and AEG, they use the pellets to make new products (Biddle).
Studies have shown that human activity has contributed to the rapid acceleration of global warming. The many landfills across the world burning their trash are emitting carbon dioxide which is destroying the atmosphere and this is a big factor to why global warming is speeding up. The EPA did a study on recycling, which showed that landfills wouldn't need to buy more land. In 1996, the United States recycled 130 million cubic yards of material, if recycling didn't occur 64 landfills would have been needed to to dispose of the extra waste. With recycling materials, companies do not need to cut down trees, mine for ore or use any other virgin materials. With companies not needing those virgin materials, it reduces the pressure for mining and forestry companies (EPA).
Recycling is the act of reusing materials to be remade or refined into something new. (*add reference*) Recycling has been used since early times to avoid buying something new so they just repaired or reused it. The late 1700s is where the American people really started the idea of recycling and hand-me-downs emerged. There has been an off and on importance of recycling in the United States. During the Great Depression and WWII era, the American people really focused on conserving materials because the economy was bad, people couldn't afford to throw valuable materials away during this this period of war. There was an incident a few years after the war where the Fresh Kill landfill in Staten Island, New York grew so large with trash it could be seen from outer space. Critiques have noted a few negative things coming from recycling; trucks that pick up curbside garbage maybe using up more energy than actually saved by recycling.
