Casa de Amparo and Child Abuse

Every day and time is scheduled with little variation and in order to gain "privileges" and lose points towards those "privileges" when they do not follow the rules. Expressing ones individuality is not really encouraged and they are often "level dropped" for arguing over rules. For example, each week there is a menu that tells exactly what the girls may eat for breakfast lunch dinner and snacks, if it is not on the menu but was donated it may be eaten at any day or time however, if it is an item that Casa personally and it is not on the menu the residents are not allowed to eat it. Staff had the wrong menu up and when one of the residents saw that chicken nuggets were on there the day before and leftovers are fair game so she decided to make some along with another girl. When the girls did not go to community meeting right away staff made a comment that it was an off menu food and that would be a level drop. That is when the argument and debate began. Girls who had been there for quite some time were saying that the other girl was right and this is the way it has always been. The staff member, who has been there a shorter amount of time than myself, called in the another staff member where they discovered the wrong sheet was up and continued to tell the girls that they would still be level dropped if they decided to eat the food that was now cooked. The frustration in their eyes was evident and I knew it was more than wanting chicken nuggets, it was another example to them that they are not always heard and instead of encouraging free thinking and being individualistic they are being molded in which "they" feel feeds the system best. Also, the system that is set in place for these residents works in a way in which the residents become reliant on the "help" received. This only intensifies the blame and puts it back onto the individual, in turn depoliticizing the issue at hand.
