Are Armed Officers the Solution?

" After the Sandy Hook incident statistics show that there were nearly 100 more school shootings after. So does having armed officers in our schools really provide enough safety or is it just a scare tactic, a deterrent, a form of showing society as well as the perpetrators that the government officials are putting an effort in to putting a stop to the violent shootings. I believe the society appreciates the fact that the government has put so much money into armed officers securing the schools but from research shows this is not the answer to the problem at hand. When it comes to the youth in schools the objective is to learn, succeed and move on to the next level of academia. However by placing more armed officers in our schools is nothing but disastrous for our youth. This is a known fact based on many of the schools in the Florida counties in which have been on board for staffing police in public schools for years now, way before the Sandy Hook incident. It has been seen throughout Florida schools that law enforcement takes an exaggerated approach and can lead to a school based arrest for minor misconduct. These minor offenses can affect the student severely, affecting their chances when applying for college, the military, or their first summer job. In the article "Armed Police Not the Answer to Improving School Safety" research shows students who are arrested in school are significantly more likely to be held back a grade level and drop out at a higher rate. In 2011-12 school year alone Florida reported that 13,870 student arrests were made. Broward which is a school in Florida has led the state with 1,062 young people being sent to the juvenile justice system almost twice that of the Miami Dade in which has a much longer student population. These arrest were made on account of disruption of a school function or disorderly conduct, reports were made that students would be charged on account of raising their voices in class.
