In our country, most of the schools hired non – native English speaker teachers (NNESTS) because of this issue I decided to research about the advantages and disadvantages of being a non- native English speaker teacher in our country. One of the goals of being a NNEST is to facilitate the English learning so as to improve the level that our country has. This essay embodies the main aspects of being a NNEST, people who can positively contribute to the English educational field by sharing their own experiences with the language as learners and also educators. I would like to say that I am going to present the advantages and disadvantages of what it means being a NNEST based on some authors such as Jack Richards, Mahboob and also based on my own experiences as a pre- graduated English teacher. First, I will refer to the advantages of being a NNEST; in addition I will provide some evidence taken from my own experience. Afterwards, I am going to refer to the disadvantages that I could find during my research and I will support it with examples that I have seen during my practicum period at schools. Finally, I will provide a brief reflection about the main aspects of this essay.
In Chile, most of English teachers were born in our country, it means that their native language is Spanish and they had to study English as a second language in order to become an English teacher. This is the first advantage of being a NNEST, because a NNEST shares the same language as his students, and understands the difficulties that most of them have to face when they listen to the target language for the first time. During my practicum experience, I have noticed that students do not understand when the teacher speaks English. I realized that in some schools, generally in the public sector, teachers do not level the students, and often they do not care if they understand or not. Probably Chilean teachers are comfortable following the government' instructions, for that reason they do not question themselves whether they are doing a good job or not, perhaps if they change this routines children will be more committed to the process of language learning.
