Dance Ensemble Critique Paper

The tension could be felt among the viewers as if something supernatural was among us, but we just couldn't see it. The next technique that the creator of the work used was dark music. The music of the dance wasn't exactly music. It was more of a collection of sounds put together. There were many noises that the track contained such as buzzing of bees, rain, wind, etc. Each noise took up a segment of the track where the dancer either stood or danced in positions related to the noise. Through the use of this type of music, I felt that the creator of the work is trying to convey the noises that a schizophrenic usually hears or feels like he or she is hearing in his or her head. The music of the dance let the audience think like how a schizophrenic would, demented. The last technique that the choreographer used was dark costumes. The dancer was wearing all black. The make up of the dancer was also dark. The eyes were outlined with dark eyeliner making the eyes of the dancer fierce. The dancer also looked like she had dark circles around her eyes making it seem like she doesn't sleep or is lacking sleep. Through this costume, the creator of the dance lets the audience see how gloomy a schizophrenic can be. It was made to seem like that schizophrenics or people with psychological disorders are usually depressed and the thought of evil things are constantly on their mind. The meaning of the work is to convey the behavior and actions of a person with a psychological disorder. Through the use of all theses techniques, Mulcahy is able to give the audience an insight into the life of a schizophrenic.
Overall, I found the work exotic. I found it interesting because of how unique the topic was. I had never come across a dance that touched a subject that many people are not very open about usually. Many dances are usually about generic topics such as love. I liked the work because of how uncomfortable it made me and the audience feel.
