Recovery After the Civil War

Sharecropping appeared in the United States shortly after the Civil War had ended. It was a way for white supremacist to continue oppressing the African American population, but eventually began effecting poor white individuals as well. In the south many white folk refused to change their ways even after suffering defeat at the hands of the Northern forces so they created this secondary form of slavery in order to continue their normal working routines and ensure their profits would not be as heavily affected by the loss of their free source of labor. What sharecropping did was essentially force families to work for a piece of land in which they were promised usually half of the revenue of all the crops they collected. The families would then be provided with supplies and basic living accommodations that had high interest rates accompanying them. These unaffordable rates often left workers with much debt so whenever they received their pay from their labor after paying off their dues they were left with virtually nothing, and in a state of poverty. In James Agee's novel Cotton Tenants we receive an actual account of the struggles several families faced during these hard times and how it affected the people of the community. .
Individuals had nowhere else to go after slavery was abolished, and the social latter was comprised of white elected officials. Sharecroppers had no choice, but to take these jobs that forced them into debt and had a negative effect on their lives. In Cotton Tenants we learn of the seven children the Tingles had and how they lost their lives due to the poor conditions they were forced to live in. Evans photos are haunting and iconic in how they show children living in poverty, and how these photos go along with the writing to show how families were grateful simply to have their children make it through their first year of life (Agee p.194). The three families in this novel struggled to survive and their health was only one the few problems they had to worry about.
