Environmental Economics

Despite the strong relationships between the economy and the environment, human activity remains to destroy the environment thus threatening future economic activity. For humans the environment is a waste sink for all their spoils of human economic activity. Many don't take into account that the environment supports the ecosystem that provides beneficial services to humans. Basic life-support services and a direct source of amenity values are provided by the ecosystem. The current market system does not reserve for the future. The use of environmental amenities today will impact on the use by future generations. As seen in Wall-e, the life on Earth in the future is not sustainable for humans to live in. It is important to preserve our environment today and ultimately benefit those people in the future.
Addressing the issues surrounding environmentalism take us to the heart of fundamental clash of world-views. The problem with this is finding a non- arbitrary way to value nature and not compel ethics that tells us what to do about the environment. Meaning the things that share the kind of essence that human beings possess are dignified and make moral claims upon us, whereas non-rational or at least non-sentient beings possess only relative value as means to some rational beings ends. The environment gains value from the way it contributes to human well-being. In Garret Hardin's article, The Tragedy of the Commons, he mentions, "Each man pursuing his own best interest in a society that believes in the freedom of the common." Hardin refers to in this statement as every individual that tries to recap the greatest benefit from a given resource. Therefore, those who consume an additional unit directly harm others who can no longer enjoy the benefits. Usually, the resource that is easily obtainable to all individuals is an interest. When a resource is commonly shared there is nothing to stop us from exploiting it.
