The Imagination of Don Quixote

In their minds they can not trust him enough to read anything because his imagination has a powerful control over his mind, and with so much power there are many uncertainties that they fear he is capable of causing harm to others and himself. It is why when Don Quixote returns ime? he is treated with so much care that they do not speak of anything relating to chivalric romance because of the "risk that it may open wounds" (487) the romances had on his mind. They feared that any mention of chivalry could awaken his imagination and off he would go which would put at risk the lives of many others. At first no one is trusting enough to encourage the growing imagination and there is a fear of the strength the imagination had on it's host.
Nevertheless as much as there were those who feared for Don Quixote there are also those who encouraged his imagination as well . One of those who are amused by Don Quixote's imagination is Don Antonio Moreno. He heard of Don Quixote and how he is living within a different reality than those around him and because of this he is considered to be insane. He feeds the imagination by jokingly placing a name card on Don Quixote's back so that the public and read it and state his name (908). He is attempting to see how the knight reacts to being well known, because if he believes he is well known as a knight he will continue to act as a knight and the entertainment continues for Don Antonio. He does not fear the outcomes of his encouragement because if he did he would do all that is in his power to diminish the imagination and send him home to where it is believed by others to be the best place for him. .
Just as there are those who encourage Don Quixote's imagination there are those who walk the fine line between his world and that of society as a whole. Sancho Panza walks that line consistently. There are moments where he can see reality and how it does not correspond to Don's Quixote's imagination such as when they encountered the windmills (64), yet there are times when he plays along and adapts what he has learned through Don Quixote and lives as a squire would.
