While reading "The Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb," I thought that Bibbs commitment and love for his family were drawbacks in his life. One reason why I believe that is because as I was reading the book I noticed that he wanted to escape but every time he escaped, his first thought was to go back after his family. I think that it was great that he wanted to have his whole family free with him but it was a risky task to complete, considering the fact that there were always slave hunters everywhere looking for escaped slaves and he could ruin his chance at freedom. .
Henry Bibb was crazy for girls. He wanted all the girls to like and chase after him as he did to them. One thing about Henry was that even though he was fascinated by girls, the land of liberty was constantly on his mind. In the book Henry Bibb mentions "I had no intention of courting or marrying her, for I was aware that such a step would obstruct my way to the land of liberty", which is showing that even though he found someone that he was truly interested in, he still planned for his liberty. When Henry met Malinda he expressed how quickly his mind changed by the influence of her. He mentioned how highly interesting and talented she was and also how he enjoyed her company. Henry could not help but to fall in love with Malinda.
When I started reading this book my first thought on Henry Bibb with his slave marriage and child, was that he was very happy. I thought this because in the book Henry goes on to talk about how he met his wife and how beautiful and talented she was also how he enjoyed being around her which lead him to falling in love with her. Then later on in life his wife Malinda becomes pregnant and Henry expresses how excited he was to become a father. .
From Henry Bibb's perspective it seemed as though his family brought him happiness that is until he was sold to the white man that owed his wife.
