The Enviroment and Over-Population

Over population is one of the world's biggest environmental issues. Currently, there are over 7 billion people on the planet but by the year 2050 the population is projected to increase to 9 billion. Has the human species taken over too much the planet? What are the consequences due to the lack of our incompetency and could this have been avoided? Consequences linked with overpopulation include an increase in demand of natural resources, increase in pollution, erosion, advanced global warming, etc. .
In Chapter four, the first section describes the nature of the environmental problems and their costs. There are 3 things that are disrupting the ecosystems severely. The first is that the increase in human population heightens the need for food, water, energy, land, etc. All of these cause stress on the environment (PG4). The second is the inequality of income throughout the world. In some countries, People only get a dollar a day while others are getting thousands or even hundreds. The third force the chapter gives is the economic growth. Even though the building of cities and buildings are important because they are creating jobs, they are also taking away land that could be used to grow natural resources.
The second section of chapter four focuses on the United States input on economic issues. The United States is linked to chemical pollution, solid waste pollution, water pollution, radiation pollution, air pollution, fossil fuel dependence, waste, and environmental degradation, which all leads to global warming. Over 70,000 chemicals have been released into the environment. More than 20,000 pesticide products are used in the United States. The United States wastes 30% of the world's resources. To be specific, Americans throw away approximately 250 million tons of waste, such as, plastics, rubber, and wood. .
The documentary, "World in the Balance", by PBS Nova discusses the population in depth and explore trends in the human relationship with the planet.
