Living A Double Life in A Doll's House

In literature, a psychoanalytical perspective examines the motives of the characters in a story or play, the author or playwright, and the impression left on the reader. When emotions, subconscious desires and thoughts, and internal struggles run amuck they can drive a person to do things they would not ordinarily do. In Henrick Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, the main character Nora Helmer finds herself facing these challenges as her "perfect" life turns upside down and she discovers that even actions made with the best of intentions can have drastic consequences, and secrets can only remain secrets for so long. .
The title A Doll's House is symbolic of Nora Helmer's life, first as her father's living doll, then her husband's. She lived in a world of feigned reality where she was a figurine placed wherever her husband or father wanted her to be, and told how she should feel, think, and act. No one took her seriously, or thought of her as anything more than a child. Naturally, as her secret comes out it is surprising to see that there is more to her character than first told. While most people know that forging a name on anything is illegal and wrong, one has to ask - is Norma even aware of what she has done before she is told? She might really be so ignorant to the ways of the outside world that she has no idea, and only wants to help her husband in any way possible. Would it also be possible that she is fully aware and thinks she will get away with it before anyone finds out? After all, she tells no one and panics when her story begins unraveling before her. She could very well be in denial, reasoning with herself that she obviously did it for good reasons. It could also be an internal cry for freedom from her artificial prison, for a chance to do something on her own, and break the monotony. Whatever her motive, her true character comes out by the end of the play and she finally realizes the life she has been living.
