Multiculturalism - A Utopian Concept

The concept is difficult to achieve due to stereotypes that are still attached to certain people. People tend to have a negative sentiment towards others and this led to the difficulty in reaching integration. From this comprehension, we can say that multiculturalism is an excellent utopian concept yet seemed impossible to implement. .
In Indonesia, education concerning multiculturalism has been taught to kids through their textbooks. It shows the desire of Indonesian government to make the people become a multicultural society. Encouragement to mutual respect and unity in diversity has become more intense. However, what is happening in the motherland is just the opposite. Interethnic riots are still there and ethnic stereotypes are not yet erased. Real example can be seen from the conflict in Poso. The conflict is triggered by demographic and religious issues. Since the government implemented a policy regarding transmigration, a lot of people came from the island of Java, Bali, Lombok, and North Sulawesi and moved to Poso. The number of newcomers then beat the natives. In addition, most of the newcomers are Muslims, while the majority of the natives who came from Kaili, Pamona, Mori, and Wana tribe are Christians (Basyar, 2003). The natives feel oppressed in their own region. Furthermore, the agricultural sector which is the main occupation of the natives is beginning to be replaced by the trading economics of the newcomers. This increases the natives' resentment against the newcomers.
The same thing happens in Maluku. The natives of Maluku feel alienated in their own land. They feel disturbed by the arrival of Bugis people. This is because Bugis people, who are the newcomers and not the natives, dominate the economy in Maluku. Ultimately in 1997, a conflict broke out in Maluku. The conflict is actually triggered by a fight between a Christian Ambonese driver and a Muslim Bugis passenger.
