The High Price of Liberty

During this time period, Great Britain was in debt after seven years of war and they wanted more control over the American colonies, mainly for economic benefit. Patrick Henry was the man who presented Virginia's Resolutions against the Stamp Act. In 1765, Henry gave a different speech, but because it was so radical, people considered his speech to be treason. Ten years later, the people started to understand Henry's previously radical speech because many did not want to be under British rule any longer. In the late 18th century, there were 13 colonies that came together to fight which started the American Revolution. Both of Henry's speeches brought people together and inspired them to join his cause, independence from Britain. .
This speech addresses men at a conference where they are debating whether they want independence from Great Britain or not. The speech was delivered in Richmond, Virginia in the Henrico Parrish Church. There were 120 delegates, including the leaders of the thirteen colonies. The speech was meant to persuade, to bring forth emotion, and change the minds of the convention delegates. He needed to change their minds because they had convened to find solutions to the Stamp Act, which would mean that they stayed under British rule. During the revolution, the name Patrick Henry meant one thing, "radical". Henry was considered a radical because going against the crown was considered treason, which was punishable by death. At the convention, Enlightenment ideals; liberty and natural rights inspired his speech. He accepted that the ideas he was presenting were not the most popular, but he was so dedicated to the cause that he didn't care. At the conclusion of the convention, proving that Henry's speech was effective, the convention voted in favor of Henry. .
Over the years, Patrick Henry had gotten a reputation of being a passionate and exciting speaker. One of the reasons that his speeches were so effective was that he used a variety of stylistic devices.
