Censorship and Development

The idea of the prisoner who escapes from the cave is comparable to an individual who begins to question their previously held beliefs. This prisoner holds certain beliefs as he is constrained to seeing only one way of living, but once freed he realizes that the outside world has more to offer and that he has been blind to reality. This is an immediate link to the failing system of a censored state as it symbolizes being captured in a cave. Due to one's conditioning and upbringing, an individual is molded into believing certain things, and eventually those beliefs are questioned and new beliefs are formed in rebellion. .
A similar example that would pertain to real life would be that of North Korea's current state where all citizens have their entire lives censored. This includes the jobs they have, the haircut they are allowed to keep, their daily rituals and specifically, the music they are exposed to. In that country, one's entire life is censored in order for North Korean citizens to have certain morals and beliefs. Though the system has great control of most citizens, many have attempted to escape and few have managed to do so. In the documentary Inside North Korea3, it is clear that due to their daily rituals and controlled lifestyles, it is out of fear of their governing system that most comply as opposed to believing that the state is right. This goes to show that regardless of one's upbringing and the imposed belief system, doubts and questioning are inevitable when being exposed only to a certain environment.
One last example that clearly shows how past beliefs are changed and evolve regardless of what was previously socially accepted is displayed through the actions conducted by the Canadian government during the Second World War. According to CBC news, during this time frame the Canadian government rallied 22 000 Canadians with Japanese origins and forcibly evacuated them from the west coast.
