Literary Structure and Style of Mark Haddon

Although the book starts of with a usual inquisitive narrative hook, it is really lacking in an imaginative plot, climax and ending. In my view the absence of these vital features of structure are a let down for the reader's expectations, but it is made up for by a sizzling background story filled with love, betrayal and murder. I think the author has chose to have a less action packed plot and no breathe taking ending to make it more believable and realistic as well as to put Christopher's disability in context with what he writes and the overall quality and events in his life. An interesting and distinctive point of the structure is the development of chapter length from short to long as the book progresses. I think this highlights his improved state of mind from the start to end, for instance Christopher forgives his father and passes his A grade math's. This positions us to feel proud and happy for Chris. Exceptionally exclusive facets of structure such as these certainly set the standard for an appealing and pleasing novel.
With great accomplishment Mark Haddon has used utterly unconventional language narration to position his audience to have a moving and even emotionally powerful response. You would think having a typical first person narration would be almost impossible with a diagnosed Aspergers sufferer as the protagonist, but we are actually flabbergasted at the unintentional humor, benefits and general allure such unique and dispassionate language can bring. For instance in one scene in the book Christopher exclaims to a lady trying to help him "ill stab you with my pocket knife". We can really picture this happening in real life and laugh at the dispassion and unreason at which Chris does this, but it can also increases our knowledge of his condition and this is why I think Mark Haddon has included such scenes. The use of correct English such as grammar and sentence length and construction are purposely left inimitably inaccurate.
