Determination in Santiago and Singh

the old man rose to his feet and started the pivoting and the weaving pulling that brought in all the line he gained" (89), the narrator explains that Santiago will battle through any exhaustion to claim victory over his new found friend. For Santiago has come to care for the fish. Saying, "Fish. I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends" (54), Santiago's drive becomes even more evident when he explains that he will kill the fish despite his feelings of companionship with it. Santiago's experience shows that the human tendency to strive for the unattainable is rewarded with the catch but in the end is ultimately defeated with the destruction of the beautiful body by the sharks. Santiago is naturally driven to bring a fish in and his habitual tendencies take over when his mind can't take anymore. .
In The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Singh yearns to reveal a ghost ship that appears at the edge of the harbor annually. But there is a problem with his efforts; every time he tries to reveal the ship to the townspeople, they don't see it and that makes him look like he is crazy. At the beginning of the story Singh has just crashed the ship into the shore and is about to recollect on the experience. Before doing so, he says, "Now you're going to see who I am", which shows his dedication to showing the townspeople, along with the readers, who he really is and that he is not truly crazy. Seconds before the ship slammed into the town, Singh states, "There it is, you cowards" and by doing so, brings forth his attitude towards the townspeople and his cockiness in proving them wrong. This also shows that Singh was so determined that he did not realize his actions of ramming the ship into the harbor in that this is the one thing the town feared: destruction from a larger figure. This theme is repeated with the image of the rocking chair whose owners have died the same way; the townspeople threw it into the ocean to get rid of the bad luck and prevent anything bigger from it.
