Globalization in Across the Wire

But, he did give the chance to you and I as readers to learn about what is actually happening in these slums that are literally less than 5 miles away from our nation of freedom and liberty and give us the chance to gain some perspective. One topic that was brought up in class that I feel was present during Across the Wire was the rise of urban slums and the violence that they cultivate. In other words, the number of these dangerous slums as been growing exponentially throughout the world and in almost every one there is an abundance of violence created by those individuals living in them. Urrea gives many examples of this concept in his book, but I think the example that he gave that genuinely made me stomach flip was when Jesusita and her husband were executed by a local militia living in the slum. Urrea explains exactly how Jesusita's husband was killed by stating "husband was held by the arms, and a sawed off shotgun was held under his nose and fired. It blew his head pieces, leaving only the back of his skull, with his ears still attached" (Urrea, 55). That vivid description had me raging with frustration in my room while I was reading. I could never even imagine living in a world where executions without some kind of trial are happening on a day-to-day basis, especially ones as gruesome as the one I just described. This incident however is not one that I could say has been directly affected or even started by Globalization. Indirectly however, there has been an increase in the amount of urban slums on the planet due to our worlds decreasing economy. .
We can also relate this situation to the concept of Social Inequality, which is occurs when certain members of a given society gain amenities and rewards by doing nothing more than everybody else. Just like the growing income gap in America between the upper and lower class, the same concept is occurring in states throughout the world.
