Writing a Formal Paper Using APA Style

The publisher is no longer selling them but they can be floating around especially if you purchase used books. .
It is important before you begin writing to take time to reflect on your topic and review the grading rubric. Consider the ideas that you want to include and be sure it follows a logical sequence following the rubric. Remember to use transition words to help guide the reader as you move along with your thoughts and emphasize your points; at this stage of your learning this should be a review. Refer to your APA manual section 3.05 – 3.11 which discusses various strategies to improve writing style (APA, 2010). In addition, as you have learned with formal writing, the structure of your paper should include an introduction, body, and conclusion. In your first paragraph you introduce the topic of your paper and describe your purpose. The importance of your topic should be clear from your first paragraph. For more help with your introduction refer to your APA manual section 2.05 (2010). For long papers in particular you might want to use separate headings to outline your various content areas (Remember to refer to the grading rubric- you do not want to lose points by going off topic). If you decide to use headings, section 3.03 of the APA manual describes how to use levels of headings. Note that there is no extra space in the example above between the heading and the next paragraph. .
             Using Citations.
It is important to cite your sources often throughout your paper. Citations should be used when using "ideas" or "direct quotes" from authors. Be careful, however to not use too many direct quotes in your writing unless you feel that the essence of your point cannot be better stated. For example, Dexter (2000) wrote that "every scholarly writer should critique every single word, sentence, and paragraph with an eagle eye when writing" (p. 7). Notice that with direct quotes the page number is included.
