Art and the Industrialization of Montreal

Yet I was most strongly drawn to four paintings in particular on the floor titled "Towards Modernism". I wanted to take a deeper look at the transformation that took place during this unique period of artistic and human innovation. The fact the title is 'towards' modernism gives credence to a movement still finding its footing. Two of the works I selected were painted by Adrien Hébert; the other two by Marc-Aurèle Fortin. It became rapidly apparent that looking into the historical context could shed light on the works of art, the artists themselves as well as their relationship with Montreal and the greater Quebec region and how this interplayed with the evolution of the movement. I had to gain a comprehensive vision of the reality of life in Montreal beginning at the turn of the century up until around 1950 (span of time in which the works were produced as a side note) to understand what forces were behind this move towards Canadian modernism. The debate between the advocates of traditionalism and modernism became a reoccurring theme in a city undergoing a transformation; industrialization molding and shaping both the landscape and cultural environment of Montreal.
I start with the work of Marc-Aurèle Fortin entitled "Commencement d'orage sur Hochelaga" both because it was actually the first painting to capture my eye and know the direction I wanted to go with my research as well it's stark contrast visually but more striking in it's contrasting imagery. In order for Fortin the paint the image he stood somewhere along the South Shore up at higher ground. Fortin often chose a viewpoint at a distance from the subject of the painting, in this case the Hochelaga district. His use of this distance was intended as for the effect it created. With this vantage point we see the land not yet infested by urban sprawl, still rolling hills of fields and farmland.
