Wangari Maathai - Kenyan Defender


The division of the power of Africa and the strategy British used was the main reason why this rebellion was not successful. There were not enough people who joined the rebellion and eventually the British crushed the rebellion. .
             In 1956 Wangari left St Cecelia's boarding school and started attending high school at Nairobi. Her interests on biology began to grow during high school and she wanted to pursue her education further more. Wangari had the opportunity to study abroad in the United States and she went to study at Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas. She got her bachelor's degree in her undergraduate studies there and her Master's degree at University of Pittsburg. At her stay in the United States Wangari liked the diversity of the people living in one place and the multicultural nature of school environment. During the 1960's racism was still present, even in a country as divers as America. The sixties also marked the independence of Kenya under Kenyatta. After earning her degree in America Wangari went back to Kenya to apply her knowledge and help the people of Kenya. The University of Nairobi also secured Wangari a job once she returned back from United States. .
             As she returned back home, she discovered that the job opportunity that she was promised was not valid anymore and her position was given to somebody else. The job at the university did not work out at the time but ended up getting married to Mwangi Mathai. One of the things Wangari Maathai became know for was being the founder of Green Belt Movement (GBM). The Green Belt Movement started to promote men and women to plant native trees to maintaining healthy ecosystem. This organization started slowly but with time it began to grow. Another goal for this organization was to get women outside of homes and educate them by doing various types of exercises like talking about problems they are encountering and other things that they are concerned about.
