ontrast between "The Last of the Mohicans" and "Rip Van Winkle" American Romantic Stories.
According to Gary Q. Arpin, writers of American romanticism "brought about in the ways that Americans view themselves, their society, and the world of nature". Moreover, he claims those romantic heroes of the twentieth and twenty- first century are descendants of Natty Bumppo, main character of "The Last of the Mohicans". Therefore, what could be some aspects that allow readers to compare or contrast both stories? Even though "The Last of the Mohicans" and "Rip Van Winkle" were written during the American Romanticism period, these are different in the way they show their love and struggle against their hardships.
Sometimes, literature written in a same period (romanticism for example) can allude to love but in different ways as in Washington Irving's tale "Rip Van Winkle", and Fenimore Cooper's hero "Natty Bumppo". The story of Rip says that he was married to an annoying wife that used to fight with him because he did not attend their home and their life as couple; on the contrary, he left home to help others and get in contact with nature. Moreover, he went to hunt with his dog, but one day he got lost in the forest and came back to town twenty years later. He found out about his wife's death, and he really did not feel sorry about what happened. Thus, Van Winkle conveys little love for his wife. Therefore, it is possible to think that he was a person with difficulties to express his feelings, which caused that his wife got irritated for his behavior and he did not care to solve the situation; he rather spend time alone or only with his dog on the woods. On the other hand, Hawkeye (Natty Bumppo) fell in love with Cora when they are in the burial ground and she demonstrates him her courage when she asks him why he did not bury his friends.
