A few days later Bob manages to persuade his mother to let him use money that he claims to have earned legitimately to rent a place for the whole family, so they can get out of the migrant camp. After he finds a rundown house way down in San Fernando with a trailer next door for Bob and his girlfriend Rosie to live in, they pack their belongings and move south.
The first day at his new school Ritchie meets and falls in love with a blond, pretty girl named Donna. He also joins a local band, and asks Donna to come and see them play at a party later. Donna tells him she will be there but she never shows up. When Ritchie asks her about it later, Donna tells him that she really wanted to go, but that her dad wouldn't let her go out that night. Despite Donna's dad's disapproval, Donna and Ritchie start seeing more and more of each other. When they are having lunch at the local coffee shop one day, we finally find out what Ritchie's connection to the airplane crash in the very beginning of the movie is. Ritchie tells Donna that his best friend had been killed by one of the planes as they came crashing down on the schoolyard after colliding in mid-air, and had Ritchie not been attending his grandfather's funeral, he would have been there, too, and would probably have been killed, as well.
Ritchie's band decides to ditch their not-so-talented lead singer so Ritchie can sing instead, and Ritchie's mom appoints herself as the bands" promoter. Ritchie is soon noticed by Bob Keene of Del-Fi Records, but Bob tells Ritchie that he only wants Ritchie, and not the rest of the band. Ritchie tells him that he can't do that, because the other band members are his friends. Bob asks Ritchie if his friends are more important to him than music, and Ritchie realizes that they"re not, and decides to stay with Bob's record company. They begin the recording process, and soon Ritchie's first single is released, and it's an instant hit.
