The True Story of Christopher Columbus

A hero is worshipped solely on their good qualities all of their undesirable ones are thrown out and forgotten on the fact that it will make their image dishonorable. Notwithstanding the idea of throwing out ones bad qualities in order to preserve ones image is highly opposed by some.
Omitting part of Columbus' story the idea of worshiping him or saying that he is some type of hero is wrong. When one completely ignores the undesirable qualities or actions of someone, they are condoning the behavior, and saying that it is accepted. So based upon the opinions of others by worshipping Columbus, his dishonorable actions are accepted and deemed justifiable. "The treatment of heroes (Columbus) and their victims (the Arawaks)-the quiet acceptance of conquest and murder in the name of progress." (Zinn) This quotes states that by glorifying heroes and disremember their victims, one is condoning murder, conquest and any other atrocity they commit. As an illustration some may say that the nationalism one feels from the memory of Columbus condones and accepts murder and conquest. Conclusively the idea of dismissing ones wrongs for their honorable rights is unacceptable, but in his own words Columbus states reasoning why his actions were justifiable.
From his own words, Columbus felt that based upon his actions he should be worshipped by the Arawak natives. A person is often rewarded or deemed as a generally good person, if one commits an act of kindness or shows integrity. By not taking advantage of the Arawak natives when they first arrived Columbus felt that the treatment the natives gave him was appropriate. "And they do not know any creed and are not idolaters only they all believe that power and good are in the heavens, and they are very firmly convinced that I, with these ships and men, came from the heavens, and in this belief they everywhere received me, after they had overcome their fear.
