"Data is a precious thing and will last longer than the systems themselves." Tim Berners-Lee, a man who believed knowledge should be free and accessible to the world. A man who thinks that computers are the future for the world and will change everything. In this research report I will be going through the life of Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, from his early life, contributions of society to his later years. .
Timothy Berners-Lee was born on June 8th, 1955 in London, England. "His parents Mary Lee Woods and Conway Berners-Lee were a couple of the engineers that built the Harvard Mark I, one of the firsts electromagnetic computers ever made."(Academy of Achievement) At an early age Tim became very interested in electronics and would often take apart remotes and other appliances to modify into other electronics he needed. Tim later went on to study at Oxford Queens College, where he spent most of his time putting together and soldering electronics together and even "built his own computer out of a car battery, a calculator, and a broken tv set, but the unauthorized use of the nuclear physics department's mainframe led to the machine being destroyed."(Friar 37) In college he started to create computer programs for computer so he could make his own programs on it and have the computer perform actions, after graduating he later found that his incredible talent and piece of work was much needed in the world around him and was constantly requested for hire. Until he was went to work at CERN and there he created a software called "Enquire" that used a new concept of programming which he called hypertext, that would allow him to link documents to text words. He then left CERN only to return once again.
Tim later found out CERN needed a more suitable way of sharing files, although CERN was already using the internet that was created by the Pentagon, Tim thought it was too hard, because you needed to know the link of a document to find it and read it and had to be submitted through a special computer.
